Brief Information

The Förderzentrum is a government school for students with special educational needs.

Objectives of our Comenius-Project

Since Autumn 2007 we have been involved in a Comenius project for school development as part of the European educational programme-Life Long Learning. This programme supports school partnerships within Europe. An objective is to exchange experiences between different countries. Each project is based on a specific theme developed by several schools from several different countries.

Our partner schools

Oismäe Kool (Tallinn/Estland)
3rd Primary School Of Special Education (Thessaloniki/Griechenland)
First Special School (Sofia/Bulgarien)

Timing of the Comenius-Project

Over a period of two years there was frequent contact between the four participating schools. The first meeting was from 25th to 29th February 2008 in Sofia. The second meeting from 2nd to 7th June 2008 was in Thessaloniki and from 13th to 17th October 2008 penultimate meeting was in Tallin. The final meeting was in our school from 4th to 8th May 2009. The official period of the project was from 1st October 2007 to 31st July 2009.

The theme of our project: „Social Integration of students with special needs“

Scope of the Project

The first meeting from 25th to 29th February 2008 in Sofia reviewed the educational system of each participating country in respect of working with pupils with special needs and their schooling. Each school presented their establishment and how they work. We were represented by Miss Hauck (Project Co-ordinator) and Mrs Greenwood. They made a presentation of the Bavarian school system concentrating on the schooling of students with special needs and then the teaching and work in the Förderzentrum Herzogenaurach. The second part of the meeting was to discuss all the presentations. Later all participants were able to visit our partner school and a local social centre in Sofia.

The second meeting from 2nd to 7th June 2008 in Thessaloniki focused on co-operation between parents and the schools. To prepare for this we interviewed our parents with a questionaire from which we were able to quantify the result. Linked to our home-page „Eltern“. Our participants were Miss Hauck(Project Co-ordinator), Mrs Klenk and Miss Machholz.

The third Comenius meeting from 13th to17th October 2008 in Tallinn had the theme of „Working with network partners which help our pupils prepare for adult life“. In this meeting we had Miss Hauck (Project Co-ordinator), Mrs Greenwood and Mrs Zech. The participants were able to visit the school, understand their working methods and join a working class. An excursion was made for the school pupils, staff and Comenius visitors to a local themed castle. Outings were made to visit their network partners: Tallinn 1st Boarding School For Children With Special Needs, the JUKS Working Centre ( Workshop for handicapped people) and the Astangu Rehabilitation Centre (Vocational training for all types of handicapped people aiming to be integrated in the open labour market).

The concluding meeting was from 4th to 8th May 2009 in Herzogenaurach. Again the participants were able to visit round the school, learn of our working methods and join a working class. Our network partner ACCESS explained how they work with some pupils in our Vocational Training class to prepare them for a job in the open labour market. Also explained was the work of the Lebenshilfe e.V. who run the afternoon care centre for our pupils. An outing was made to the Barmherzige Brüder in Gremsdorf who run various workshops for disabled people, including the severely mentally handicapped. An excursion was made to Nürnberg, the first part of which was to accompany one of our classes led especially for the mentally handicapped on a cultural visit to the imperial castle. The second part was a guided tour through the „Garden of the senses“ exhibition. The Comenius participants were also able to attended a class at the local Montessori-School. Back in the school everyone was able to enjoy our project the Café Kunterbunt run by the vocational pupils. Everyone met to prepare their project posters for the touring exhibition and to discuss the results of this Comenius project.

Looking back we now see the value of having joined the Comenius project. We learnt about how different countries approach social integration for pupils with special educational needs and this brought new ideas to us.
